Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each... Entre abril y diciembre de 2008, en las estaciones fijas frente a las zonas de Esmeraldas, Punta Galera y Puerto López, se identificaron un total de 95 241 huevos de peces los mismos que pertenecieron a 10 órdenes, 31 familias, 35 géneros, 7 especies y organismos en sus primeras fases (fase mórula), de los cuales la Familia SCIAENIDAE fue la mas abundante; mientras que el número de larvas obtenidas fue 83 735; que pertenecieron a 19 órdenes, 56 familias, 83 géneros, 21 especies y organismos en estadios de prelarvas siendo la especie Bregmacero bathymaster la mas abundante durante los meses de muestreo. This is the first report of a longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus)nursery ground. The results of more than ten research cruises conducted since 1990 in the southern patagonian shelf are presented in this study. The nursery ground (52°S to 55°30'S)was detected by the presence of larvae between 5.60 to 12.80 mm of standard length in November and December in that area, with depth ranging from 90 to 160 m. These are the eggs, larvae and less frequently the juveniles of marine fishes. There are three principal reasons why ichthyoplankton surveys are made. Firstly, the surveys are often directed toward a single target species in order to use the distribution and abundance of the pelagic eggs to obtain an estimate of the biomass of the adult spawning population. Engraulis anchoita is the most abundant and widespread ichthic species in the SW Atlantic. Two populations of the species occur in the Argentine Sea, a northern one or Bonaerense (34 degree -41 degree S)and a southern one or Patagonian (41 degree -47 degree S). The former performs an annual migratory cycle which includes the concentration in the northern area in winter, the distribution in coastal waters off Buenos Aires prov. during spring spawning period and the concentration in the shelf feeding ground in summer. In this work the feeding habits of the northern population were studied in its spring habitat.
